My impression of IBC 2024 in Amsterdam

Unfortunately I couldn't take part this year because I was at a Chinese table tennis training camp with and for my son. And so the IBC in Amsterdam had to take place without me. From the newsletters and via LinkedIn I was at least able to find out where the focus was - here is a brief overview.

A few words about the photo - it shows me with my long-time friend Valdimar Wik at the legendary IBC Lunch in Amsterdam 2023. I owe a lot to Val. He carefully supported me as I entered the world of IT after my studies.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial intelligence remains a key topic, particularly when it comes to automation, improving operational efficiency and personalizing user experiences. AI is expected to streamline workflows, improve content quality, and provide more precise audience insights.

Qvest presented concrete use cases of how generative AI can already improve media workflows and achieve efficiency gains. In collaboration with NVIDIA, advanced AI-powered solutions are being developed to realize the full potential of GenAI

(No longer so) new business models

Ad-Supported Streaming

There is a clear focus on the evolution of business models in broadcasting, including innovative approaches to content distribution and monetization. In particular, the concept of Free Ad-Supported Streaming (FAST) and dynamic advertising are becoming increasingly important.

This is exactly where we at konzentrik come in with our RapidStream platform. We allow independent integration of different ad servers to avoid vendor lock ins and generate quick results.

Audience First Mindset

Companies were encouraged to develop an audience-first mindset that focuses on audience needs and preferences. This requires the integration of data analytics and networked processes to plan and distribute content in a targeted manner.

Putting the customer at the center is not a groundbreaking insight, it only shows in the very new area FAST after the technical ones hurdles have been overcome and the focus is (finally) on the customer again.

Sustainability

Environmental awareness

The discussion about sustainable practices in media production is becoming increasingly relevant. The industry is looking for ways to reduce its environmental footprint, especially when it comes to live streaming events.

Innovation projects

The IBC Accelerator Media Innovation program presented projects that address sustainable practices and technologies. These projects aim to develop innovative solutions to current challenges in the industry.

Conclusion

All in all, it sounds like exciting days with lots of good exchanges for the industry. It remains to be seen how AI will impact, but the ideas sound exciting. I'll definitely look into taking part again next year.
